Part of Hay Street is a pedestrian mall located between William and Barrack Streets.
Hay Street Mall is restricted to pedestrians; vehicles are not allowed to pass through it. Before the 1970s, this used to be an open street where cars , buses and trucks were free to pass. During the 1970s, it was closed to vehicle traffic and was converted into a pedestrian mall.
The road surface was raised and benches, flower boxes and big umbrellas were installed along the pavement
The street was named after Robert William Hay, who was the Permanent Undersecretary for Colonies.
