Sainte-Mère-Église was one of first towns to be liberated as part of the D-day landings. It was occupied by troops of the US 82nd and 101st Airborne Divisions.
This milestone marks the start of La Voie de la Liberté, or Liberty Way which runs from Sainte-Mère-Église to Bastogne , in Belgium[2] following the path of General George Patton. Each kilometre is marked by a milestone, or "borne". It was opened in 1947, and was celebrated by a 6 Franc stamp, including a 4 Franc surtax which helped to finance the creation of the bornes.[3]
This is a fine example. Some of the other roadside ones are plastic, and held together with a "belt" of adhesive tape.
