The battle of Znojmo/Znaim was the last battle on the main front of the Franco-Austrian War of 1809, and was cut short after Napoleon agreed to Austrian offers of an armistice.

Znojmo (German: Znaim) is a city in the South Moravian Region of the Czech Republic, near the border with Austria.
In July 1809 Znojmo and its environs went through chaos and suffering caused by the final battle of the War of the Fifth Coalition between the French and Austrian armies.
Napoleon Bonaparte had been quite successful to get his vast army to the very centre of the Austrian Empire. By the bloody victory at Wagram near Vienna on July 6th 1809 the French Emperor forced the Austrians to withdraw across Weinviertel all the way to southern Moravia. There, in the vicinity of Znojmo, the retreating army commanded by Archduke Charles was gradually caught up by Napoleon’s vanguard.
On July 10th Marshal Marmont’s regiment attacked the Austrian lines in Dobšice (Klein-Teßwitz) below Znojmo and in the end succeeded. The Battle of Znojmo then continued from the dawn of July 11th by ferocious and bloody struggle for the bridge over the Dyje River in Oblekovice (Oblas) near the Louka Abbey. Marshal Masséna managed to break through the line and in the afternoon he and his soldiers were slowly advancing through Starý Šaldorf (Alt Schallersdorf) towards the city of Znojmo.
Below the Vienna Gate they had to face a fierce Austrian counterattack. The inconclusive situation hand in hand with the French superiority (approximately 100,000 French soldiers against 60,000 Austrians) eventually made the Austrian Archduke surrender and accept the terms of truce (the Armistice of Znaim). The consequences of the battle for Znojmo and nearby villages were disheartening: the French army was to occupy the city for the next four months, taking whatever provisions at will, plunging Znojmo into huge debts.
In 2002, initiated by the Military History Club in Znojmo, a memorial of all who fell in the Znojmo battle was unveiled in Dobšice-Znojmo.
