The first resident of the house was William Rookes whose family owned the large estate of Royds Hall Manor.
The building had become derelict but was considered important enough to become an English Heritage Grade II*
listed building in 1952. This is what possibly saved it from demolition but it was finally renovated in 1993 and was turned into small offices which are occupied by a firm of architects. During the renovation the outside of the building was extremely well preserved.
A blue plaque on the wall has some information about the building's history.

THE FIRST SPINNING JENNY
IN BRADFORD DURING THE
EIGHTEENTH CENTURY.
The Spinning Jenny mentioned on the plaque was a multi-thread spinning frame invented in 1764. Bradford was later to become a major textile manufacturing town. This
website claims that it was this first Spinning Jenny that triggered this development.
The same website explains that the first known reference to the name Paper Hall is from 1756 when the Stansfield family moved into the house.
