As you face Heroes Plaza, look to the left wall which encircle it. Towards the back, you will see this bas relief sculpture. It is so deep that the people seem to pop off of it. It features representative faces from all the battles/wars in which Canadian County residents have taken part, starting with what appears to be the Mexican War. All the major wars, starting with the Civil War, are, of course, represented.
A notable feature of the work is that it recognizes ALL of the local faces which might have appeared on these battlefields. There is an African-American man in a Vietnam era hat; there is a woman in a WWII era WAC/WAF uniform; there is a Native American in native garb representing the scouts who fought along side the cavalry, who fought on both sides in the Civil War, and the Code Talkers.
Over all, an eagle flies. The sculptor is himself a USAF veteran and is responsible for a number of other area sculptures.
