Right here to the WAPPAPELLO DAM, under construction (1940) across the St. Francis River. The $6,656,000 project is part of an extensive program of flood control covering this area and adjoining parts of Arkansas. - Missouri: A Guide to the "Show Me" State, Tour 6, pg. 426.
The Lake Wappapello Dam was completed in 1941. It was constructed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers primarily for flood control. The dam is 2700 feet long with a height of 109 feet. It has a concrete spillway measuring 740 feet. Lake Wappapello covers 45,000-acre (180 km2). The lake is known for its recreation opportunities with boating, fishing and camping available at many locations.
