Alex is a small town of 550 to 600 people located south of the Washita River in Grady County. The town was named for William Vinson Alexander who opened a store here in 1881, and a post office was first established in 1885.

The Alex public school complex has numerous buildings housing grades K-12. In front of the auditorium on 2nd Street, an eight feet high columns of donated bricks supports a large bell which once rang out to call local children to school. The bell is supported by its original uprights and yoke, and still has the crank which once was attached to the rope for ringing.

This school history website shows a three-story school building in use until it was severely damaged by a tornado in 1918. It is probable that this bell once rang from the roof of this school. (visit link)
