Johann Friedrich Herbig arrived in the colony of South Australia in 1855. He leased land from George Fife Angas near Springton in the Barossa Valley (about 60 kilometres north east of Adelaide), but was so poor that he lived in the hollow trunk of the red gum tree across the road from the well. Herbig married in 1858 and after several children were born, the family built a hut and lter a stone cottage a couple of hundred metres from the tree. Herbig eventually became a prosperous and prominent member of the local community.
