Donald Campbell C.B.E. set and held World the Water Speed Record with Bluebird his jet powered boat, on Coniston Water, during winter 1967. His body and wreckage were not found until 2001, on the lake bed.

Following in his father's footsteps, Donald Campbell pursued speed records on land and water. A replica of his father's car, also called Bluebird, used in the film, is on display at Lakeland Motor Museum, currently at Holker Hall. Soon to move to new location at Haverthwaite.
The wreckage of Campbell's boat was never found after his crash in 1967. Until a crew of divers found, and brought the wreckage up, in 2001. The intention being to put it on permanent display in Coniston.

There is a Campbell memorial slate seated area with plaque, in centre of village at N 54 22.140 W 03 04.380, as well as another plaque next to The Bluebird cafe, his old boathouse, by the lake. N 54° 21.832 W 003° 04.013
Coniston village celebrates Campbell's presence is many ways.
