The Place:
Anderson, California is a town of approximately 9,000 located about 10 miles south of Redding in northern California. It was established in 1872 as a station on the Central Pacific Railroad, being named for Elias Anderson who donated the railroad right of way across his sizable land holding. After WWII Anderson boomed as the demand for housing grew and the lumber industry that was its mainstay prospered.
The Person:
In the late 1850's Elias Anderson 1817~1907, acquired 160 acres of land along the Sacramento River in southern Shasta County, California. Having built a hotel on his land, when the railroad came through the area donated land for the right of way. He later moved the hotel to the where the new railway station, named Anderson had been built. When the post office needed a postmaster, it was Elias Anderson. Today Anderson's grave can be found in the somewhat neglected IOOF cemetery to the south of Anderson.
