The origins of the University of Victoria lie way back in 1903, when Victoria College was founded as an affiliated college of McGill University. The original staff consisted of two faculty members, and the first class contained four women and three men. The college grew over the next 60 years, moving to several different locations around Victoria and becoming affiliated with the new University of British Columbia. On July 1, 1963, the institution gained autonomy and became the University of Victoria. The final move was completed in 1966 when the last faculties moved to the current site, which now encompasses 385 acres. All but a few of the academic buildings are located inside Ring Road, a perfectly circular, 600 metre-diameter road.
The campus is well-known for its architecture and sustainability, with 5 LEED Gold certified buildings and many awards for sustainability. The Finnerty Gardens host one of Canada's best collections of rhododendrons, and much of the campus is either in its natural state or beautifully landscaped. The mild climate makes the University of Victoria a very popular destination for prospective students.
