The Leids Dagblad was established by Albertus Willem Sijthoff, the first issue dated from March 1, 1860. Nowadays it is being published by HDC Media.
This waymark shows the office of the Leidsch Dagblad designed by the well-known Dutch architect Dudok. It is located at the Witte Singel 1 in Leiden and was in use from 1917 until recently. Currently a smaller office is in use.
The ornaments designed by W.C. Brouwer, together with the stained-glass windows reflect the function of the building and the newspaper in general. The roosters on the outside of the building reflect to the news distributed early each morning. Wrought iron letters still give the name of the newspaper and the entrance to the Tijdingzaal (news room) where the public could read the latest news.
Nowadays this monumental building is in use as a district court (Kantongerecht).
