The Gueudecourt memorial stands on the British front line of 17 November 1916 as it stood at the close of the Somme Offensive launched on 1 July 1916. Clearly visible to the left of the caribou is a preserved trench line.

The Gueudecourt Memorial is a Dominion of Newfoundland war memorial that commemorates the actions of the Royal Newfoundland Regiment during the Battle of Le Transloy, a sub-battle of the Battle of the Somme of World War I.
Le village de Gueudecourt est à cinq kilomètres directement au sud de Bapaume.
C'est là que, le 12 octobre 1916, le Newfoundland Regiment déclencha son assaut héroïque pendant la bataille du Transloy, une des plus importantes batailles de la Somme.
