There are many beautiful works of art using all sorts of mediums spread throughout this terraced area on the Museum's west end. Located on top of a brand new parking facility, this artfully landscaped green “gallery without walls” is located between the Azalea Garden and the museum’s West Entrance. This area overlooks the river and the Fairmount Water Works. There always seems to be something new added as recently two new members joined the sculpture club. The garden is dedicated to the museum’s late director Anne d’Harnoncourt, and reflects her passions for art and the city of Philadelphia. the sculpture garden is open to the public throughout museum hours.
I have had an opportunity t waymark the individual sculptures, most of which are on the SIRIS catalog. There are some new additions as well: Weary wanderers will have the chance to rest their legs on recent acquisition Lips (2012), by late Austrian artist Franz West. While the playful pastel sculptures reach into the new fall sky, they leave plenty of ground room to double as park benches that put the childhood jungle gym to shame.
If garden lakes are more your style, quench your thirst with Ellsworth Kelly’s Curve I (1973), modeled after the artist’s impressions of a flattened paper cup. While it may not ripple in the sunlight, its weathering steel oxidizes over time, demonstrating interaction with the environment in an ever-growing blush of rust. Sculptural in its form and design, the Garden is divided into five sections: the Upper Terrace, the Lower Terrace, two graveled galleries and a paved plaza. As the landscapes of the Sculpture Garden change with the seasons, so will its artistic offerings. Its 2009 inaugural installation—Isamu Noguchi at the Philadelphia Museum of Art—presents a fascinating selection of sculptures by American artist Isamu Noguchi (1904–1988), who had longstanding ties with the Museum and Anne d’Harnoncourt. Additional works include two concrete block sculptures by Sol LeWitt, Steps (Philadelphia) and Pyramid (Philadelphia); two chairs, a bench, and a table by Scott Burton; Steel Woman II by Thomas Schütte; Flukes by Gordon Gund; and Claes Oldenburg’s iconic Giant Three-Way Plug (Cube Tap), presented to the Museum by Geraldine and David N. Pincus in memory of Anne d’Harnoncourt. The Garden’s most recent installations include a remarkable work made of weathering steel by Ellsworth Kelly entitled Curve I, from 1973, and Lips from 2012 by Austrian artist Franz West—a towering large-scale sculpture in three parts conceived specifically for the site.
The Anne d’Harnoncourt Sculpture Garden was designed by OLIN landscape architects working with Atkin Olshin Schade Architects. It received official commendation from the Federal Environmental Protection Agency for its environmentally friendly design The Garden has also been generously supported by The Annenberg Foundation, Marguerite and Gerry Lenfest, The Pew Charitable Trusts, and Penelope P. Wilson. It is a Community Conservation Partnership Initiative supported by the Growing Greener II Bond Fund, administered by the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources. SOURCE
