Fort Celeste

In 1789 Fort Celeste was erected by the Spanish government on the bank of the Mississippi at New Madrid.  This fort was named in honor of the wife of Governor Mire of Louisiana. All vessels using the river were stopped at this point for payment of duty and search of cargo, this was the home of the Spanish commandants and was manned by a Spanish garrison.  The Spanish fleet was anchored by the fort to guard the river.
