Poseidon
Poseidon is one of the twelve Olympian deities of the pantheon in Greek mythology. His main domain is the ocean and is also known as the "Earth Shaker" because of his role in creating earthquakes.

The asteroid
4341 Poseidon (1987 KF) is an Apollo asteroid and Near-Earth object discovered on May 29, 1987 by Carolyn S. Shoemaker at Palomar Observatory.

The Apollo asteroids are a group of near-Earth asteroids named after 1862 Apollo, the first asteroid of this group which was discovered by Karl Wilhelm Reinmuth. They are Earth-crosser asteroids that have orbital semi-major axes greater than that of the Earth (> 1 AU) but perihelion distances less than the Earth's aphelion distance (q < 1.017 AU). Some can get very close to the Earth, making them a potential threat to our planet (the closer their semi-major axis is to Earth's, the less eccentricity is needed for the orbits to cross). The February 15, 2013 Chelyabinsk meteor that exploded over the town of Chelyabinsk in the southern Urals region of Russia, injuring an estimated one thousand people, breaking windows and destroying buildings, is thought to have been of the Apollo class of asteroids.

Carolyn Jean Spellmann Shoemaker (born 1929) is an American astronomer and is a co-discoverer of Comet Shoemaker–Levy 9. She holds the record for most comets discovered by an individual. As of 2002, Shoemaker had discovered 32 comets and over 800 asteroids (counting the as-yet unnumbered ones)
