Visitors to the wonderful Balboa Park in San Diego get a real treat when they get to see, and ride on, the
Balboa Park Carousel. It is one of only a few built by the Herschell-Spillman Co. of New York that is still operational.

In 1994, this carousel was awarded the National Carousel Association's "Historic Carousel Award." It is also one of only a few Carousels with an "Operating Ring Machine." The one on this carousel is a pre-1960 machine.
The NCA Historic Carousel Award is given to recognize carousels that meet the following criteria:
• Historic significance
• Innate quality or character
• A proven program of restoration and maintenance
• A regular schedule of operation
• An owner or support group likely to ensure that the carousel
will continue to be available to the public as an operating machine

The carousel was originally built in 1910 for the Luna Park in Los Angeles. Then it was moved south to Coronado. Finally, it was moved to its present location along Park Boulevard near the World Famous San Diego Zoo in Balboa Park.
The Balboa Park Carousel operates daily during the summer and on weekends and school holidays throughout the rest of the year.
