This broken propeller is located at the end of a short side-trail off the Galloping Goose Regional Trail. A plaque next to the propeller describes the history of the area and how the propeller was found:
After the province purchased this land from the Songhees and Esquimalt First Nations in 1911, it became the home of ship building and other industrial uses.
The original shoreline was very close to where the Dockside Green waterway is now. Over time, the rest of the Dockside site was filled in to accommodate heavy industry.
Island Tug and Barge moved the Princess Mary vessel onto the Dockside Green site to serve as a cafeteria for their workers.
The rail unloading ramp was close to the Bay Street Bridge.
This propeller is a reminder of that ship building history and was uncovered while remediating the Dockside lands in 2005.
