The island of Puerto Rico offered the first significant source of fresh water, shelter and other resources to ships sailing from Europe to the New World via the west coast of Africa. And San Juan Bay offered an excellent deep water harbor. In order to defend this “rich port”, the Spanish built several large fortifications at various strategic locations. Among these are La Fortaleza, Castillo San Felipe del Morro and Castillo San Cristóbal.
Sentry boxes were located every so often along the walls of the fortifications and as such offer a near ubiquitous site in old San Juan. Hence, a sentry box was chosen as the central design of the stamp which commemorates the 450th anniversary of the founding of San Juan.
The particular sentry box shown on the stamp is located at the extreme western end of Castillo San Felipe del Morro as viewed from the main plaza or 5th level of the fort.
