The Boy with a Wineskin sculpture is also known as the Satyr With a Wine Bag. The original dates back to antiquity and it is difficult to determine the intent of the unknown artist. It could either be a sculpture of a mortal or that of a mythological figure.
A 20.5" by 17.75" gilded bronze figure of a young boy or satyr is standing on a 2" by 8" by 3" concrete base. The figure is smiling and completely nude except for a headband on his forehead. He is leaning back with his left foot in front of his body. His right arm is outstretched in front of him and he is carrying a wineskin wrapped around his tucked-in left arm.
The statue was acquired by Saint-Gaudens from the fabricator P. P. Caproni & Brother and was placed in the center of the north side of his home, Aspet, about 1887.
