Formerly this location was not a park, but a square named Salt Meadow Square. The park started in 1887 after a donation by the then Chairman of the municipality, consult John Phillips, who wanted to beautify Norrköping.
Today this park greets those visitors who arrive at Norrköping Central Station, and walking into the city center.
On the north side of the park is a fountain from 1877 called "Dolphin Fountain", even though it really is a kind of salmon that are pictured. This part of the park was built in 1867 and was formerly known as Railroad Park.
A statue depicting Charles XIV was erected in 1846. It is the one that gave its name to first Karl Johans Square and then Carl Johan Park.
The park is also known for its cactus garden display.
