This marker honors the photography endeavor of Leo J. Beachy, who was raised on a nearby farm named Mount Nebo in the 1800’s.
At the young age of 31, Beachy began his hobby of photography, which he called his “real calling”. For the next two decades, he photographed mountains, the villages, and the travelers he passed on the National Road.
He was later stricken with the illness, Multiple Sclerosis, at which point, his sister Kate drove him and carried him to workable areas where he could photograph.
Today, there are over 2,500 photos still legible, mainly because they were placed in glass frames and have been featured on several media outlets, including Maryland Public Television.
