The construction of the church, decided in 1490 by Jacques of Beaumont, Lord of Bressuire, was finished after its death by 1498 by his son-in-law André de Vivonne. The keystones of intersections of the ribs are decorated with the blazons of the Lords of The Mothe-Saint-Héray, Jacques's blazon of Beaumont appearing in the keystone of the oriental span over the high altar.
Burned by the Protestants, the church was restored by 1582. Transformed during the Revolution into Temple of the Reason, she was of this fact saved.
Supported by four foothills, the west wall appears as a wall pine nut at uneven hillsides, because the right hillside is cut by the bell tower. The crawling of the pine nut contain hooks and sculptures of animals and devils.

La construction de l'église, décidée en 1490 par Jacques de Beaumont, seigneur de Bressuire, fut achevée après sa mort vers 1498 par son gendre André de Vivonne. Les clés de voûte des croisées d'ogives sont ornées des blasons des seigneurs de La Mothe-Saint-Héray, le blason de Jacques de Beaumont figurant à la clé de voûte de la travée orientale au-dessus du maître-autel.
Incendiée par les protestants, l'église fut restaurée vers 1582. Transformée lors de la Révolution en Temple de la Raison, elle fut de ce fait épargnée.
Epaulée par quatre contreforts, la façade ouest se présente comme un mur pignon à versants inégaux, car le versant de droite est coupé par le clocher. Les rampants du pignon comportent crochets et sculptures d'animaux et de démons.
Des modillons à têtes humaines marquent les angles du clocher primitif. Exhaussé en 1861, il était garni d'une pyramide en ardoise, qui a été remplacée en 1905 par une flèche en pierre.
