In 1997, the United States authorized the issuance of quarter-dollar coins with the face of George Washington but periodic issuance (every 10 weeks) of a quarter with the images selected by and representing each state on the reverse side. The quarters were issued in the order that each state entered the Union.
The State of New York chose a depiction of the State map with an overlay of the State of Liberty. That quarter was first issued on January 2, 2001. It also has a caption, "Gateway to Freedom". It was designed by Alfred Maletsky.
