The New Salem Common District is located in the center of the town. It includes the Town Common and its north and south surrounding area for about 3/4 of a mile. The area contains 35 buildings, artifacts and sites. Most of the buildings date back to the 19th century.
The Town Common was as area set aside by a grant from the first proprietors in 1734 and owned by the Town of New Salem after 1753. The town was first settled in 1737. The area included a training ground for soldiers of the Revolution and War of 1812, the common, a pound, churches, houses, tannery, shops, schools and taverns.
New Salem was named for the settlers from Salem that founded the town. The town became larger geographically with the building of the Quabbin Resevoir in 1930 to 1939.
