Caesar
1977 – 2004
The first successfully delivered
cesarean birth gorilla. He touched the
lives of all who saw him.
Removed one generation from the wild - his parents had been captured – the silverback male Caesar lived for 26 years at the Los Angeles Zoo.
Caesar never bred with any of the females at the zoo, so in August of 2003 the 525-pound gorilla was shipped to the Atlanta Zoo on a FedEx plane, in hopes he would breed with silverbacks there. Unfortunately, he died a few months after arriving in Atlanta, before he was able to sire any offspring. .
The memorial is located inside the Los Angeles Zoo near the Campo Gorilla Reserve exhibit and the Gorilla Grill restaurant. Admission is required to enter the zoo.
