This is a beautiful marble plaque which was erected by members of his battalion. The Major was killed in action at Fleur Baix, France in the battle of Neuve Chapelle on March 10th, 1915 as a member of the Seventh Battalion, First Contingent of the Canadian Expeditionary Forces. He is buried in Rue-David Military Cemetery in France, in Plot II. D. 49.

He had previously served in the 45th Regiment, 1st Battalion, Sherwood Foresters from 1890 to 1911. Became Brevet Major in 1900. He commanded 4th King's African Rifles from 1905 to 1907 and also served in the Royal Niger Company's Expedition (1896), the West African Campaign (1896-1897), the South African Campaign (1899-1902), and the East African Expedition (1906).

Major Percy George Rigby was born in London, England on December 24th, 1871, the son of Major General Christopher & Matilda Rigby. It is not known when he arrived in Nelson, but he was apparently a rancher while there.
