This benchmark is located next to a fire hydrant on McCoy Street at the intersection with Columbus Parkway in Opelika, Alabama.

At the time of my visit, the fire hydrant was painted red with a blue top. There was a concrete pad near the hydrant, with the mark located between them. I used my coordinates for this post.

The 1968 description from the datasheet reads:

DESCRIBED BY COAST AND GEODETIC SURVEY 1968 AT OPELIKA. AT OPELIKA, ABOUT 0.15 MILE SOUTHEAST ALONG U.S. HIGHWAY 280 FROM THE NEW POST OFFICE, 65 FEET SOUTH OF THE CENTER OF THE INTERSECTION OF U.S. HIGHWAY 280, STATE HIGHWAYS 37 AND 169 AND TORBERT BOULEVARD, 12.7 FEET SOUTHWEST OF THE CIRCULAR CURB CONNECTING STATE HIGHWAY 37 AND THE BOULEVARD, 1 1/2 FEET SOUTH OF A FIREPLUG, 0.4 FOOT NORTHWEST OF THE NORTH CORNER OF A 4-FOOT SQUARE CONCRETE CATCH BASIN AND ABOUT LEVEL WITH THE HIGHWAYS AND IS A DISK ON THE TOP OF A COPPER COATED STEEL ROD 1 INCH BELOW THE LEVEL OF THE GROUND AND PROTECTED BY A 5-INCH METAL PIPE THAT IS FLUSH WITH THE LEVEL OF THE GROUND. THE ROD WAS DRIVEN TO A DEPTH OF 24 FEET.
