At the time of the first war (1848 - 1850) there was a great feeling of national pride in Denmark and many patriotic songs were published. The songs were so popular that song sheets were even given to the troops.
In 1849 Danish author Hans Peter Holst published "den lille hornblaeser" (The little horn blower) a series of stories dealing with episodes of the war of 1848 -1850.
The main character in the stories was a young boy who volunteered to join the army and led the troops into battle blowing his horn or more likely bugle. In the stories the horn blower survived the war and returned to his home a hero.
The bronze statue shows a foot soldier in uniform carrying the young boy who is blowing his horn. It was sculpted by Hans Peder Pedersen-Dan and erected in 1899. The full title of the sculpture is "Landsoldaten med den lille hornblaeser" (Foot soldier with The little horn blower).
