Lieutenant Colonel Townsend E. Griffiss was born in Buffalo, New York, April 4, 1900. He graduated from the United States Military Academy in 1922 and from Advanced Flying School Kelly Field, Texas, in 1924. Colonel Griffiss arrived in the United Kingdom in 1941 and was killed in action when his plane failed to return from a special mission to Mosow, Russia, on February 15, 1942

Griffiss' B-24 Liberator was shot down by friendly fire over the English Channel. There is a memorial to Griffiss in the Forest Lawn Cemetery in Buffalo, New York, and at the Cambridge American Cemetery and Memorial in Coton, Cambridgeshire, England. Soon after his death, the Rome Air Depot was named after Colonel Griffiss.
