A unique cairn, built on a cantilevered base, with smaller, less "engineered" cairns in perimeter. This is located on the Finger Lakes Trail, only .3 miles west of where the trail crosses South Road, and about .3 miles east of the Shindagin Leanto.

My husband mocked me over how far I was willing to drive to get pics and coordinates for this cairn, but I didn't have a camera or GPSr with me when I discovered this, so I felt it was worth the detour when were in the general area once again. If you check out the pics, I think you will find it is worth making the detour as well!
The stones in this area were probably once part of an early farmers stone wall, or even just a pile where they were accumulated from a what was once a cultivated field. It is now part of Shindagin Hollow State Forest. Some of the stones are blackened if if used as a campfire ring at some point.
As for the purpose of the cairn, I don't believe it commemorates anything. My guess is that engineering students from nearby Cornell found this cache of stones to be a ready source of material, and got creative!
