Tour 21 in the guidebook starts with: TENNESSEE LINE to ASHEVILLE, 56 m. US 19W and 19. This route winds through a region of towering peaks and deep valleys. Through a sparely settled forest area, the highway runs between cliffs of white sandstone streaked with bronze on one side and a rocky creek bed half-hidden by rhododendron and laurel, on the other.
US 19W crosses the Tennessee Line at SPIVEY CREEK GAP, 0 m. (3,200 alt.), 15 miles south of Erwin, Tenn.

--- NORTH CAROLINA - A Guide to the Old North State

US 19W was an "old" way through the high mountains of northwestern North Carolina, winding down to Asheville. A curvy path with just enough mountainside carved out to keep a road hugged to the slope. This location is the northern end at the Tennessee Line in an area known as Spivey Creek Gap or just Spivey Gap. Uploaded photos show the roadway, rhododendron and creek, and rock outcropping as mentioned in the guidebook.
