Established in 1889 as a private school. Has been a state supported institution since 1893.

Cullowhee Academy in 1889 became Cullowhee Normal and Industrial School in 1905, then Cullowhee State Normal School in 1925, then Western Carolina Teachers College in 1929, and finally Western Carolina College in 1953.
