The town of Potsdam was formed in 1806. It got its name from the distinctive red sandstone in the area which resembled that in Potsdam, Germany.
The Town Hall was originally housed in the "Civic Auditorium" next to the original library buildings. However, when the library collection became too large for its facilities, the previous town hall and former Universalist Church were incorporated into the library and the town hall moved to 35 Market Street. The present-day Town Hall was built in 2013.
