The cardinal markers, at the foot of the spindle of the weathervane, are simple and just depict the four main points of the compass using letters coloured gold.

The sailing barge appears, from ground level, to be cut from copper but may be another material. It shows the sailing barge under full sail with the directional arrow pointing ahead of the ship. The pivot is in front of the centre of the sail mass so the sails of the barge cause it to turn into the wind.

Thames sailing barges are still seen on the river today but are restoration projects and the only cargoes they tend to carry are of the human passenger/tourist variety. They pass this point on a regular basis.
