The villa reached its greatest splendour, at the beginning of the 19th century, when it was purchased by Gian Battista Sommariva who had the interiors decorated with works of art by Canova, Thorvaldsen and Hayez and decided to give the gardens a romantic look by adding statues, steps and fountains that frame the views of the Grigna mountains and the Bellagio headland. The gardens of Villa Carlotta, open to the public according to the season, are world famous for the spring flowering of over 150 varieties of rhododendrons and azaleas.
