This two-story with rear ell house is one of several built in this manner in Sutton in the 1810s and 1820s. This house form grew in popularity in the first three decades of the 19th century.

Jonathan Dudley, Jr., built this house in 1826, one year after his
marriage to Sarah R. Torrey. He was 28 years old at the time of
construction. It was sold to Col. Reuben Waters who lived there
for several years. Subsequently it was owned by James Phelps who
sold to Gardner Gibson, a carpenter. Numerous other families owned
the property after 1879.
