The following article from MSSU's "Accents" publication about the rededication of the memorial, includes information about the monument.

"Missouri Southern will honor area veterans next week on its symbolic 75th day of class with a re-dedication ceremony of the MSSU Veterans Memorial.

The ceremony will begin at 12:45 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 13 at the plaza located on University Parkway between Hearnes and Webster Halls.

The Memorial, established in 1986, features a plaque that was dedicated in honor of the university's 50th anniversary. Student veterans will unveil a new plaque honoring military service members.

"We hope the community can join with us as we pay this renewed tribute to veterans at Missouri Southern and throughout the area," said Missouri Southern President Bruce W. Speck

The November 13 ceremony will coincide with the 75th day of the new semester in recognition of Missouri Southern's 75th Anniversary, which is being observed in 2012-2013.

The re-dedication will include the presentation of colors, patriotic music including the National Anthem and comments from President Speck and Captain Amanda Self, MSSU professor of military science.

The original bricks for the memorial, 340 in all, were salvaged from Joplin Junior College at 4th and Byers. The bricks were donated in the 1980s by Mrs. Harry Gockel, wife of longtime JJC/MSSU professor Harry Gockel.

A new flag honoring all branches of U.S. military service will be raised. Veterans in attendance will be invited to participate in the flag-raising.

The program will close with the playing of "Taps." The event is expected to conclude by 1 p.m."
