Shawnigan Lake is the second largest lake in the Cowichan Valley Regional District. The village of Shawnigan Lake is located on the northeast shore of the lake. Due to the topography around the lake, the temperature is often higher than surrounding areas in summer, but also lower in winter leading to more snowfall. A former Canadian National rail line, now converted and part of the Trans Canada Trail, runs along the west side of the lake. There are numerous water accesses around the lake, as well as two major beach parks in the village. The posted coordinates are for one of the lake accesses at the northern end.
