“Absence of Emptiness” was carved by local artist Juergen Eckstein from a large log of piece of redwood which was recovered from the beach in late 2007. The sculpture was complete and dedicated on August 17, 2012. (

Redwood -- 2012
Inspired by Gottfried Benn’s poem “Two Things”
gone through so many words
through I and we and you
that could all be borne
with the eternal question: why?
this is a child’s question
only late you became aware
there is no choice but accepting
your predetermined: you must
whether roses, whether snow or oceans
whatever blossoms decays
there are only two things:
emptiness and the individual I.
