This naval cannon is a "magnificent trophy of war" captured by United States forces from the Spanish cruiser Vizcaya at the famous Battle of Santiago Bay - a crucial engagement of the Spanish-American War.

"Less than one year later, at the request of local citizens and US Congressman Robert Hitt, Galena received by rail car this "monster gun" - 19 feet long and weighing nearly 5 tons. The weapon was dedicated here in Grant Park as part of the city's annual Grant Birthday Celebration (April 27, 1899), where it was to "be a display of public valor and virtue in all coming time."
The cannon was rededicated in July of 1899 through the efforts of the City of Galenna, the Galena Foundation and friends of Galena history."
