A look at Civil War Corinth
Through the eyes of wartime artists and photographers.
The Corinth House stood in the distance, facing the historic railroad crossing and the Tishomingo Hotel. This photograph shows it after the Union Army occupied Corinth.
In the exciting months before Corinth fell to the Union Army in 1862, townsfolk and Confederate soldiers crowded its hotels, attending dances, parties and other social events. Shortly before the Battle of Shiloh Mr. and Mrs. Pannell, owners of the Corinth House during the war, hosted a grand Confederate Ball attended by General Beauregard and other senior Confederate officers. It is said that champagne flowed freely on that occasion, served from a small supply the Pannells had carefully saved for a special event.
After the Battle of Shiloh, Corinth House became a hospital. Here famed Confederate nurse Ella King Newsom treated wounded Southern soldiers.
Corinth is part of the Civil War Discovery Trail.
