Whaletown on Cortes Island was part of the Columbia Coast Mission until St. John the Baptist Church was built in 1950. It was transferred to the Anglican Diocese in 1967. It is currently under the auspices of St. Peter's, Campbell River.
Although it does not hold regular Sunday services, it is still used for funerals and memorials of island residents.
