The fountain and with its beautiful central bronze sculpture was commissioned by the Lanning Family, created by Jean Gautherin, and donated to Smith College in memory of their daughter, Mary Tomlinson Lanning, class of 1912. As a sophomore, she became ill and died in 1910. It is placed in a fountain in the middle of a circular walkway at the edge of the Botanic Gardens facing the Burton Lawn.

The statue depicts a young woman with her right hand in a small fountain from which water trickles down into a large, circular concrete basin. It was cast by the American Art Bronze Foundry of Chicago and erected on site in 1912.

The front base of the statue carries the inscription:

IN MEMORY OF A BEAUTIFUL LIFE
.

The right base is inscribed:

Brownell Hall 1908
Smith College 1912.

The left side has her name and dates:

Mary Tomlinson Lanning
September 18, 1888 - January 10, 1910
