This piece of horse-drawn equipment was used to rake straw, grass, alfalfa, or other hay crops into piles after it had been cut with a sickle mower. The rake would sweep up the cuttings and when a large enough amount had been gathered the rake would be lifted with a lever, depositing the bunched material which would later be pitched onto wagons to be taken to the storage haystack.
