SAN AUGUSTIN, S. Stone Ave. between W. Ochoa and W. Corral Sts., a Catholic cathedral of modified Spanish design with double towers and red-tile roof, was built in 1897 to replace old San Augustin. The stained-glass windows were brought from Mexico.- Arizona: A State Guide, Tucson section, pg. 259.
The Cathedral of Saint Augustine continues to serve as the cathedral for the Roman Catholic Diocese of Tucson. The cathedral was originally planned to be in Gothic style but was not completed in that form. It was in 1928 the brick building was transformed to its current Mexican baroque form including cast stone facade. The cathedral underwent a complete restoration project beginning in 1966 in which the cathedral was demolished except for the towers and facade and rebuilt. The project was completed in 1968. The cathedral underwent another thorough restoration which was completed in 2011.
