MANDALAY

The second most expensive home on the Canadian side of the Thousand Islands belongs to Swiss businessman Ronald Samann.

While Samann has put up fences to protect his privacy, the sprawling property -- named Mandalay -- has perhaps the most ostentatious front gate of any along the St. Lawrence.

The house, built between 2006-2009 and located between Gananoque and Kingston, was designed by Ottawa custom builder Gordon Weima of Weima Enterprises. The Samann river house is lavish, with about 20,000 square feet of living space.

The three-storey brick mansion and its surrounding 100 acres are assessed at $5.5 million.

The house is so private that it can only be seen from off shore, where it's a tourist attraction for tour boats coming from Kingston.
