The marker explains that Lincoln first came to the courthouse in 1837 wearing "ill-fitting homespun clothes, the trousers a little too short, and the coat a trifle too large." Ultimately, Lincoln appeared often in this courthouse trying cases.

On April 16, 1865 a large crowd gathered on the courthouse lawn to mourn the death of "a personal friend."
