This drill was used to automatically plant a single row of a crop. From the size of the feed tube, it appears to be for setting onions or potatoes. The chisel at the front opened up a furrow and the onion or potatoe eye was automatically metered at the proper spacing down the feed tube and into the furrow. Later models had a drag or other device at the rear to close up the furrow and compact the soil over the set.
