From their websites:

The UI Arboretum is a living laboratory, including plant collections and facilities that support the teaching, research, and public service programs of several units throughout campus. Located on the campus of the University of Illinois, it was developed in the late 1980s to early 1990s, and is currently 57 acres.

Central to the Arboretum was the development of the "All American Selection Trial Gardens," established by a bequest from Miles C. Hartley in the early 90s. The Department of Horticulture originally maintained the gardens and in 2004 the Arboretum was moved to the Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Sciences within the College of Agricultural, Consumer and Environmental Sciences (ACES).

The arboretum is being constructed on the university's south campus farmlands. Developed sections are as follows:

Welcome Garden - an entrance and meeting place.

Japan House - tea garden (2002), dry or Zen garden (2003). The house itself contains three tea rooms, and is otherwise used for classes and meetings; it is not generally open to the public.

Hartley Garden (1994) - a 3-acre (12,000 m2) sunken garden with All American Selections trial ground and annual and perennial beddings.

Idea Garden - six areas including borders, ornamentals, vegetables, children's, and Special Projects.

Sasaki Associates designed the original master plan of the Arboretum in 1990. It called for 26 major regions including a Woodland Habitat, a Savannah Habitat, and a Prairie Habitat. Dedicated in the Fall of 1994, the Hartley Selections Garden launched the Arboretum, a gift of faculty member Miles C Hartley. At the front of the path leading to the Gardens, the Welcome Garden makes new visitors at home. It was a gift of the Noel Family and is dedicated to Roseanne Noel's grandchildren. Nearby the Hartley Gardens is the Idea Garden, a set of 6 plots maintained by Master Gardeners of the Champaign County Extension Unit.
